You can also use this recipe for making tortillas as small or as large as you want to customize your taco night experience.

Flour

Flour is the cornerstone of this delicious flour tortilla recipe. It helps to provide the perfect texture and flavor for your homemade tacos. Flour is used in almost all types of tortillas, as it helps to bind everything together and give the dough a soft, pliable consistency. Additionally, flour adds an extra hint of sweetness to the recipe, making it more flavorful and enjoyable.

Salt

Salt is an essential ingredient in this flour tortilla recipe, as it helps to enhance the flavor of the dough. Salt also helps to bind all of the ingredients together and provides a subtle sweetness that enhances the overall flavor profile. In addition to its role in enhancing taste, salt also helps with texture by providing structure and stability for a soft, pliable dough. Without salt, these tacos wouldn’t be quite as delicious!

Baking Powder

Baking powder is an essential ingredient in this flour tortilla recipe, as it helps to create light and fluffy tacos. Baking powder is a leavening agent that helps dough rise during baking, resulting in a noticeably fluffier texture. It is the perfect addition to this dish for all taco lovers out there looking for a softer, more airy tortilla. This ingredient helps create an enjoyable dining experience with its subtle flavor and subtle sweetness, which adds complexity to the overall flavor profile of the dish. In terms of texture, baking powder also helps create a more pliable dough that won’t crack when rolled out or cooked on the stovetop. All in all, baking powder is an essential ingredient in this flour tortilla recipe that truly takes tacos to the next level!

Oil

Oil is an essential ingredient in this flour tortilla recipe, as it helps to add moisture and flavor to the dough. It also helps to make the dough more pliable and easier to roll out or shape into tacos. Additionally, the oil adds a subtle richness that enhances the overall flavor profile of the dish and is an ingredient most households already have available. Without it, these homemade tacos wouldn’t be nearly as delicious! Lard is the more traditional way to make flour tortillas but to make these tortillas as easy as possible to make, oil is a great substitute.

What Tools You WIll Need

Directions

Step 01

Add the flour, salt, and baking soda to a mixing bowl and whisk to combine.

Step 02

Mix the oil into the water and slowly pour into the flour mixture while folding with a spatula until a dough forms.  Knead the dough just until combined and form into a ball. Cover and rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Step 03

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 6 pieces (for burrito-sized tortillas) and roll into balls. Lightly flour the top of the dough to prevent sticking and roll the dough out using a rolling pin until the dough is almost transparent when held up to the light or roughly 1/8 inch thick.

Step 04

Heat a large pan on medium-high heat (I recommend cast iron or nonstick pans). Once the pan is hot add a tortilla without any oil added to the pan and cook for 30-45 seconds on each side until the tortilla begins to puff and brown. Repeat with the rest of the dough.

Step 05

Serve & Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use lard or leftover bacon fat in place of the vegetable oil to add more flavor.
  • Make these ahead of time and store them in an airtight container until ready to use.
  • Roll your tortillas out as thin or thick as you want to customize your tacos

FAQ

What type of flour should I use for this recipe?

All-purpose flour is the best option for this recipe as it is light enough to create fluffy tortillas without being too dense. However, you can also substitute with a gluten-free flour blend if desired. Just make sure that you adjust the amount of liquid in the recipe accordingly.

Can I use any oil to make these tacos?

Yes! Any neutral-tasting oil such as vegetable, canola, or sunflower oil will work perfectly in this recipe. We recommend using a high smoke point oil so that your tortillas don’t burn while cooking.

Is baking powder really necessary?

Yes! Baking powder helps to create light and fluffy tacos and is essential for achieving the perfect texture in your homemade tortillas. Without it, your tortillas may be dense and heavy instead of soft and fluffy.

How long do I need to cook the tortillas?

The length of time you cook them depends on how big they are; usually, smaller ones will take less time than larger ones. Generally speaking, each side needs about 30 seconds to 1 minute on medium heat. Be careful not to overcook them as they can burn quickly if not watched carefully!
