Cake

I am using a boxed cake mix for these Halloween cake pops. You can of course make your cake from scratch with your own cake recipe, but this is a quick and easy way to get the job done. You will need one box of whatever cake flavor you prefer, during October you may even be able to find Halloween funfetti cake mix. I am using regular funfetti cake mix for this particular recipe. Other good options would be chocolate cake, red velvet, white, or even angel food cake. Add a couple of drops of food coloring to your cake to give it an even more festive look.

Frosting

For the frosting, I am using the matching funfetti store-bought frosting which is essentially just vanilla with extra sprinkles. Use whatever frosting you prefer or that goes with your cake flavor. The frosting is only being used to bind the cake together to form your cake balls and won’t be visible from the outside so take this opportunity to add more flavor to your Halloween cake pops. Cream cheese frosting or buttercream frosting are also both excellent options for adding more flavor and richness to your Halloween cake pops. If you use food coloring in your cake, don’t forget to add a few more drops of food coloring to your frosting to match it.

Coating

The coating is what gives these Halloween cake pops their spooky and Halloween-appropriate look. I am using melted candy melts in black, white, and orange candy colors. You could also use chocolate chips or regular melting chocolate, but the candy melts are easier to work with and harden quickly without making too much of a mess. If you are having trouble knowing where to find these, you can find them in most craft stores or online here.

Decorating

Once your Halloween cake pops are coated, it is time to decorate! For this particular recipe, I am using candy sprinkles in Halloween colors for the Halloween cake pops. You could also use chocolate chips, candy eyeballs, or anything else you can think of. You can make mummy cake pops or any variety of spooky cake pops you desire, get creative and have fun with it!

Directions:

Step 1

Prepare the cake mix as instructed on the packaging. Allow cake to cool for 1 1/2 – 2 hours or until it is no longer warm.

Step 2

Cut the cake and place it into a food processor and pulse until it is broken apart. You may need to do 1/3 or half of the cake at a time if you can’t fit the whole cake in at once.

Step 3

Add frosting to the cake mixture 1 tablespoon at a time and pulse between tablespoons until the cake begins to ball together. This is usually 3-5 tablespoons of frosting. Once your cake is able to form a cake ball without breaking apart, transfer it to a bowl.

Step 4

Use your cake mix to roll 1-inch cake balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper.

Step 5

Melt a handful of your candy melts in the microwave and stir until smooth. Coat the ends of your cake pop stick with the chocolate and insert a lollipop stick into your cake balls. Place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes so the chocolate can harden.  *This will help them stay in the cake when coating*

Step 6

Remove the cake pops from the refrigerator and place them on a prep surface. Heat up the candy melts that you will be using and stir until smooth. Have your sprinkles prepared as well.  Begin dipping your Halloween cake pops in the desired color candy you chose and then add your decorations before the chocolate hardens. Return to the parchment paper and repeat the process until done. Place the cake pops back into the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes to harden the chocolate.

Step 7

Serve and Enjoy

Notes

  • Store your cake pops in a cake pop stand to save space and give them a nice presentation. There is a link to a cake pop stand Here.
  • If you don’t have room in the fridge you can bring the cake pops out and let them set at room temperature once the chocolate hardens.

FAQ

What Are Cake Pops?

Cake pops are essentially cake balls on a stick. They are made by combining crumbled cake with frosting and rolling it into a ball. The balls are then dipped in melted chocolate or candy coating and decorated as desired. Cake pops can be made in any flavor combination you can think of and make for a fun and festive treat!

Do Cake Pops Need To Be Frozen Before Dipping?

No, cake pops do not need to be frozen before dipping. I find that they are easier to work with when they are at room temperature or even slightly warm. If your pops are too cold, the coating will harden too quickly and be difficult to work with. If your pops are too warm, the coating will be thinner and more likely to drip. Room temperature is the sweet spot!

Melted Candy Melts

Candy melts are a type of chocolate that is specifically designed for melting and dipping. They come in a variety of colors and flavors and can be found at most craft stores. I prefer to use candy melts because they harden quickly and are less likely to make a mess than regular chocolate chips or melting chocolate.

Do You Refrigerate Cake Pops

Yes, cake pops should be refrigerated after they are made. This helps the coating to set and prevents the pops from getting too soft. I recommend storing them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
