Cheddar biscuits are a delicious and easy-to-make recipe that can be enjoyed in many different ways. Whether you’re looking for the perfect breakfast sandwich, some savory biscuits and gravy, or just a tasty side dish to serve with dinner, these cheddar biscuits have you covered! Made with sharp cheddar cheese and other simple pantry ingredients, this is an easy way to elevate any meal.
Flour
All-purpose flour works best for these biscuits because it makes them light and fluffy. Be sure to sift the flour before measuring it so you don’t end up with lumps. You can experiment with different flours, but this is a good middle ground that will help keep your biscuits from being too dense.
Baking Powder
Baking powder is important in this recipe because it helps the biscuits to rise. It makes them light and fluffy instead of dense. You must measure out the baking powder correctly so that your biscuits come out just right.
Sugar
Sugar is used in this cheddar biscuit recipe to add a bit of sweetness. It helps to make the biscuits taste even better and make them more balanced. You can choose to use a sugar substitute or omit it altogether if you choose to but it will take away from the biscuit so I wouldn’t recommend it.
Salt
Salt is used in this cheddar biscuit recipe to add flavor and make the biscuits taste better. It also helps to balance out the sweetness from the sugar. Salt is a must in baking pretty much anything as it helps bring out and enhance the flavors of your food. You can adjust salt levels to your liking but I found this to be a great balance for these biscuits.
Butter
The best butter for these biscuits is unsalted – that way, you can control how salty your finished product turns out. You will want your butter cut into cubes or my preferred way is to use a grater. You may want to freeze your butter for 20 to 30 minutes before to make it easier to cut or grate.
Cheese
Sharp cheddar cheese is the star of these biscuits, so be sure to get the best quality you can. You’ll want to use freshly-grated cheese instead of pre-shredded, as it melts better and has a stronger flavor.
Milk
Milk is used in this recipe to make the biscuits soft and fluffy. I prefer to use 2% milk because it makes the biscuits lighter and fluffier than if you use other kinds of milk. You can use whole milk if you prefer as well or you can even experiment with nondairy milk.

What Tools You Will Need
Directions
Step 01
Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar to a mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Grate or cut your butter into the flour and use a fork to mix it in and push it into the dough until it begins to clump.

Step 02
Add your shredded cheese to the dough and mix it in with the fork the same as you did with the butter.

Step 03
Slowly poor in your milk while whisking or using your hand to mix until you get a rough dough.

Step 04
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface or cutting board and kneed it until it combines. Do not overwork the dough or you will end up with a much more dense biscuit. Once your dough is combined fold it in half and press down gently, then fold the other way and press down gently. Roll your down out gently with a rolling pin until it is roughly 1/2 inch thick.

Step 05
Using a biscuit cutter, cut out your biscuits from the dough and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a baking mat. Take any leftover dough and repeat step 04 until you cannot get any more biscuits.

Step 06
Bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove from oven and optionally brush lightly with butter and sprinkle some salt over the top.

Step 07
Serve & Enjoy

Notes
- If your dough is not holding together add some extra milk a teaspoon at a time until it holds together. You want the dough to feel slightly dry so don’t add too much milk.
- To brown more during baking, brush with butter before placing in the oven.
- If you want extra cheese biscuits, add up to another 1 ounce of cheese.
