Biscuits

biscuits

I am using store-bought biscuits for this recipe to keep things simple but you can make your own if you prefer to go that route. You can use your favorite store-bought biscuits, I will be using the original Pillsbury Grands biscuits. If you prefer you can make your own homemade biscuits for an even fresher tasting meal.

Sausage

Sausage gravy is what makes biscuits and gravy so delicious. For this recipe, I will be jimmy dean’s regular breakfast sausage but you can use any type of sausage you like. If you aren’t a fan of pork sausage you can use turkey sausage or omit the sausage altogether if you want to keep the recipe vegetarian.

Gravy

gravy

Most Gravies consist of a roux and some form of milk or cream. I am using equal parts butter and flour for the roux and fat-free milk in this recipe. As for the seasoning, I am using salt, pepper, and garlic powder for the gravy, and then the sausage will finish off the gravy.

FAQ

How Do I Make Breakfast Gravy?

Gravy is typically made from a roux, which is a combination of flour and fat that is used to thicken sauces and gravies. For this recipe, we’ll be using butter as our fat. Once the roux is made, it’s simply a matter of whisking in some milk until you get your desired consistency. Then, you’ll add in your seasonings (salt, pepper, and garlic powder are traditional) and let the gravy simmer until it’s nice and thick. Lastly, we will add some sausage to add more flavor and some protein. Delicious!

What Biscuits Should I Use?

For this recipe, we recommend using a good quality buttermilk biscuit. Buttermilk biscuits are light and fluffy, and they have a subtle tang that pairs perfectly with the rich gravy. If you can’t find buttermilk biscuits, regular biscuits will work just fine. Just be sure to bake them according to the package directions before adding them to the gravy. You can also make your own biscuits instead of buying store bought if you prefer.

What Sausage Should I Use?

For the sausage, we recommend using a good quality breakfast sausage. Breakfast sausage is typically made from pork and seasoned with sage, salt, and pepper. It has a delicious flavor that pairs well with the other ingredients in this dish. If you can’t find breakfast sausage, you can also use ground pork. Just be sure to cook it until it’s nice and browned before adding it to the gravy.

How Can I Lower The Calories?

If you’re looking to lower the calories in this recipe, there are a few things you can do. First, you can use leaner cuts of pork sausage or use turkey sausage. Second, you can use skim milk or cashew milk instead of 2% milk. And finally, you can use a low-fat biscuit. All of these substitutions will help to make this dish healthier without sacrificing flavor.

Can I Use Margarine Instead Of Butter?

Yes, you can use margarine instead of butter in this recipe. Margarine is a good alternative for those who are looking to avoid dairy. You can also use any other butter substitutes you want and it shouldn’t be an issue.

Can I Use A Different Flour?

If your trying to avoid using regular flour there are several options out there. However, they do all react differently and may require some experimenting to get the correct amount right. Some alternatives would be almond flour, coconut flour, and tapioca flour.

Can You Thicken Gravy Without Flour Or Cornstarch?

Yes, you can thicken gravy without flour or cornstarch. If you haven’t experimented with Xantham gum yet, it works amazing as a thickening agent, just add small amounts because a little goes a long way. You can also just simmer the gravy until it reduces and thickens. This will take longer than using a roux, but it’s a great option if you’re looking to avoid gluten or grains.

Can I Make This Dish Ahead Of Time?

Yes, this dish can be made ahead of time. Just cook the gravy and sausage ahead of time and store it in the fridge. When you’re ready to eat, simply reheat the gravy and add your biscuits. We strongly recommend reheating in a saucepan on the stove, microwaving can work but the sauce tends to separate and it can become a mess if you aren’t whisking while reheating it. Breakfast will be ready in no time!

What Goes Good With Biscuits & Gravy?

There are a few things that go well with biscuits and gravy. First, you can add a side of eggs. scrambled, fried, or poached eggs are all delicious options. Second, you can add a side of fruit. A bowl of fresh berries or sliced bananas would be perfect.
